A hot air balloon mainly consists of three systems: the Envelope (Balloon), the Burner System, and the Basket (Gondola). The Basket is often their first consideration, as its space and comfort greatly influence the overall experience. The Basket, also known as the Gondola, is the lowest part of the balloon, housing passengers and equipment and connecting to the entire system. What is a Basket made of? Refer to the diagram below. This shows the detailed structure of a basket. These components make up a complete basket. I will now explain the composition of a basket in detail.
• Basket Structure: Typically woven from rattan, willow, or composite materials. With advancements in technology, baskets made of fiberglass are now available. Its flexibility helps cushion impacts during landing, reducing the force of the ground on passengers. Furthermore, the basket structure is lightweight yet has a high load-bearing capacity, allowing the balloon to fly further with less fuel consumption.
• Load Frame: The core metal frame responsible for load-bearing and structural connection. Usually hidden inside the basket, it is a load-bearing system made of metal or steel. The Load Frame is actually one of the most critical load-bearing structures in the entire hot air balloon, primarily responsible for bearing all the weight. It connects to the burner system at its top and is the core framework of the entire balloon's load-bearing system, a key guarantee for flight safety.
• Burner System: Located on the top frame of the basket, its main function is to heat the air, allowing the hot air balloon to ascend. The system uses a main burner to supply hot air, which is ignited by the ignition system to launch the hot air balloon. Once in the air, control valves regulate the fuel release, thus controlling the balloon's altitude. Note: Hot air balloons typically fly at altitudes between 100-1000 meters.
• Fuel System: Generally uses Propane, a type of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Propane is chosen for its high combustion efficiency. It is usually stored in fuel cylinders, which have pressure regulators and safety valves.
• Suspension System: The system connecting the basket and the balloon is the suspension system. It consists of a support belt made of steel cables or Kevlar fibers. Before flight, the support belt must be checked for proper adjustment. If not adjusted to the correct length, the balloon may tilt in the air.
• Flight Instruments: Common equipment for flight monitoring includes an altimeter, envelope temperature, variometer, and GPS.
• Safety Features: Includes side rails to prevent passenger falls, compartments, grab bars and footrests, and emergency shut-off valves.
